Ballard Master Bathroom

When the homeowners moved into their dream home 23 years ago, their first goal was to remodel the dated and cramped master bathroom. At the time, they had a small toddler in tow and one more on the way, so a larger and more efficient bathroom was necessary for a growing family. With the 1980’s colorful culture playing a large role in their design choices, they chose a vibrant color palette to liven up the dated space. Having lived with the rainbow themed bathroom for over 20 years now, the homeowners were desperate to move into the 21st century with a remodel that exudes traditional class with a twist of contemporary.

While staying with the exterior footprint of the bathroom, the interior layout was modified to achieve the needs of the clients. In the original bathroom, the vanity contained one sink and no drawers for the homeowner to store the necessary bathroom essentials. The old vanity was replaced with a double vanity installed on the adjacent wall to give the homeowners storage and individual counter space while the existing linen cabinet and laundry shoot bench were refaced to match the new vanity. The flow of the room had originally been constricted by full-height shower walls, giving the shower a cave-like atmosphere. The walls were replaced by pony walls with a glass enclosure to open the space to natural light. Although the structural aspects played a large part in the transformation of this bathroom, it was the finish materials that stole the show in the end.

Even with the square footage remaining the same, the floor was used as the focal point for the room, where a Thassos and Carerra marble were laid in checker board pattern. Thassos marble was also used for the wainscoting and adorned with a decorative border of Carerra marble and a Thassos plaza molding while the walls were given a deep graphite color to accentuate the wainscoting. The traditional fixtures for the shower and vanity were chosen in a polished chrome finish to highlight the detailing and add a bit of “glam” to the new space. The soapstone countertop on the vanity and shower walls were the final touches to complete the elegant new master bath.
